Colonial Granada was founded in 1524 on the shores of Lake Nicaragua (Lake Cocibolca) making it one of the oldest colonies in Central America. In that period Granada was one of the most important harbors in Central America.
The city of Leon, also founded in 1524, was originally 20 miles east of what is now present-day Leon. Due to Volcano Momotombo’s eruption in 1610, the city was severely damaged; this resulted in its people moving the city to its current location.
Lake Nicaragua, the largest body of fresh-water in Central America, is home to Ometepe, which is the largest lake island in the world.  The lake is also peppered by about 500 volcanic islands and at some point was one of the few places in the world where fresh-water sharks inhabited.
